Responsibilities

The Physical Therapist is responsible for assesses plans, organizes, and practices in rehabilitative programs that improve mobility, relieve pain, increase strength, and decrease or prevent deformity of patients suffering from disease or injury.   Provides educational information about physical therapy and physical therapists, injury prevention, ergonomics, and ways to promote health.  Plans, prepares, and carries out individually designed programs of physical treatment to maintain, improve, or restore physical functioning, alleviate pain, and prevent physical dysfunction in patients. Evaluates effects of treatment at various stages and adjusts treatments to achieve maximum benefit.  Administers manual exercises, massage and/or traction to help relieve pain, increase the patient’s strength, and decrease or prevent deformity and crippling.  Instructs patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home. Reviews physician's referral and patient's medical records to help determine diagnosis and physical therapy treatment required.  Identifies and documents goals, anticipated progress and plans for reevaluation.  Informs the patient when diagnosis reveals findings outside their scope and refer to an appropriate practitioner.  Directs and supervises supportive personnel, assessing their competence, delegating specific tasks to them and establishing channels of communication.  Administers treatment involving application of physical agents, using equipment, moist packs, ultraviolet and infrared lamps, and ultrasound machines.

Qualifications

Must possess a current NYS Physical Therapist.  Bachelor or Master of Science in Physical Therapy or Doctorate of Physical Therapy.  Two years experience preferred.  Basic computer knowledge required.  Demonstrated ability to communicate in writing, using advanced writing skills.
