Responsibilities

The registered pharmacy technician may, under the direct personal supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assist such licensed pharmacist, as directed, in compounding, preparing, labeling, or dispensing of drugs used to fill valid prescriptions or medication orders or in compounding, preparing, and labeling in anticipation of a valid prescription or medication order for a patient to be served by the facility, in accordance with Article 137 of the Education Law where such tasks require no professional judgement.   In addition, the registered pharmacy technician may assist a licensed pharmacist in the dispensing of drugs by performing functions that do not require a license under Article 137A of the education law.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Under direct personal supervision of a licensed pharmacist:

  1. Assists in maintaining compliance to USP 797 for the Sterile IV room including gowning and garbing, IV drug preparation using aseptic technique, daily equipment cleaning and calibration.
  2. Must maintain annual competencies including glove fingertip test and media fill test.
  3. Demonstrates ability to attach drug vial to Baxter IV Bag mini bag plus adapter.
  4. Demonstrates ability to utilize DoseEdge.
  5. Demonstrates ability to utilize Baxa repeater pump.
  6. Assists in maintaining compliance to USP 795 Extemporaneous Compounding.
  7. Assists in maintaining compliance to USP 800 Hazardous medications standards.
  8. Assists in compounding, labeling, or dispensing of medications.
  9. Prepares medications and delivers to patient care areas.
  10. Repackage bulk liquids/tablets/capsules into pre-packed unit dose.
  11. Performs basic functions via Meditech system, Amerisource Barcoding system and Medi-DoseMILT 3.0 system.
  12. Performs all functions necessary for Pyxis machines, including but not limited to, refilling, loading/unloading, managing inventory, managing outdated inventory, troubleshooting and regular physical maintenance.
  13. Performs functions necessary for Pyxis CII safe and handles controlled substances in accordance with DEA regulations and departmental policy and procedures.
  14. Performs all necessary steps for maintaining departmental inventory including ordering supplies and medications, receive/process supplies and medications, return supplies and medications, ensure supplies and medications are within expiration dating and restock supplies and medication storage areas as needed.
  15. Refills and maintains ACLS trays.
  16. Maintains departmental records in accordance with policy and procedures.
  17. Performs monthly pharmacy and nursing unit inspections.
  18. Communicates interdepartmentally and intradepartmental via telephone, computer, or physically to assist in medication distribution process and daily pharmacy processes.
  19. Aids in the training of students, new employees or volunteers.
  20. Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement activities.

 

Qualifications

  • Certification from a nationally accredited pharmacy technician certification program acceptable to NY State
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • One (1) year related pharmacy experience with automated dispensing cabinets and USP 797.
