Responsibilities

Under the leadership and direction of the Communications Supervisor.  Operators receive internal and external telephone calls while stationed at the hospital communications center.  They are responsible for receiving, directing, and forwarding calls to the appropriate patient room, department, or person.  Console operators are responsible for assisting patients, physicians, employees, volunteers, and visitors with their telecommunication needs.  Operators are trained and assigned to the telecommunications center utilizing equipment and computers as provided.

Qualifications

Must have excellent verbal communication skills.  Must have good writing skills.  Must be able to speak English and Spanish with appropriate volume and clarity.  Experience with switchboard console operations required.  Computer experience required.  Must remain calm during tense situations often performing multiple tasks at the same time. Must be able to follow and provide direction/information.  Must have excellent hearing with near acuity. Vision clarity includes reading from computer-sized screen.
