The Medical Assistant Assists the physician, nurse practitioners and registered professional nurses in administration of patient care. This includes participation in the observation of patient conditions and promptly reports changes to the responsible nurse. Responsible for greeting patients, taking and documenting vital signs and preparing patients for provider examinations and procedures. Responsible for performing selected tests, including but not limited to: electrocardiograms, phlebotomy, and obtaining other specimens as ordered by provider in accordance with SJRH’s Laboratory procedures. Performs clerical duties such as record keeping, filing patient charts and utilization of electronic communications to stay abreast of clinic matters and share information. Assists with front desk phone coverage as needed. Coordinates scheduling of HOPE Center patients to optimize patient care and manage patient flow. Demonstrates competence in patient care procedures and technical skills appropriate to the clinical area and needs of the patient population served. Maintains medical inventory in examination and treatment areas and orders in-house supplies; and, contributes to the maintenance and orderliness of the physical environment that is conducive to meeting the needs of the patients and staff. Performs scheduling of offsite specialty referrals. Maintains tracking system for appointments which includes documentation of scheduled appointments, collection of appropriate medical documents to be included with referrals, communication with patients regarding appointments both by phone and by mail, coordination of referrals with providers, and case management staff. Utilizes opportunities for clinical learning and participates in continuing education activities to meet established requirements and for own professional development. Participate as an active member of the department’s Quality Improvement efforts, including the maintenance of the department’s NYS – PCMH recognition.
