Responsibilities

The Unit Secretary/Unit Clerk performs receptionist and clerical duties as appropriate to the area of clinical practice.

Greets and assists patients, visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff. Answers telephones and verbally communicates effectively, responding promptly to general information, requesting and conveying messages. Participates  in  maintaining   complete,  accurate  medical  records, and current  patient/unit  data  within  the information system, and on appropriate forms. Performs routine clerical tasks including order entry/data retrieval, as appropriate to the clinical area. Assists in providing prompt response to patients’ call systems, refers requests promptly and appropriately. Places calls to physicians' offices and to other departments as requested. Demonstrates awareness of and sensitivity to patients’ rights. Maintains patient confidentiality. Maintains effective and timely communication with nurses, other staff, patients and families. Keeps nurses’ station clean and clutter free. Maintains cooperative working relationships and supports staff in the performance of their duties. Monitors  unit  inventory  and  use  of supplies; communicates  problems  to the Nursing  Manager  and  Materials Management  Department. Reports maintenance repair requests and monitors for completion. Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff. 

Qualifications

Must understand and use Medical Terminology and be proficient in computer skills.

Medical database system or Meditech knowledge preferred. Excellent communication and customer service orientation required. High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate Degree preferred.

Clerical experience on a fast paced unit preferred.
