Responsibilities

 

The Anesthesia Technician prepares and supplies equipment, as well as offering general support to Attending Physicians and the Nursing team. This support is provided before, during, and after medical and technical procedures.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assumes responsibility for the set-up of Anesthesia carts and types of equipment for the Operating Room and all external sites related to Anesthesia including documentation which includes emails.
  • Cleans and performs routine maintenance of anesthesiology machines, echo, pics, fiberoptic, transport monitors, BIS monitors, and ultrasound equipment and records maintenance as required. Inventories equipment and is familiar with the current location of equipment and related supplies.
  • Control of inventory relating to supplies and order necessary items with manager’s approval.
  • Assembles and calibrates arterial and multi-pressure transducers, calibrates MS 800 monitors, multi-priority equipment IE-Echo’s, software, MIS, PICIS, and other related devices to meet departmental needs. This is not intended to an exhaustive listing but only provides examples of equipment processed as relating to anesthesia devices and policies.
  • Pick up supplies and “E” cylinders for the Receiving Department and departmental equipment from various other areas of the facility including troubleshooting MRI equipment. Equipment located in other areas/mailrooms because of patient transports, repairs and other reasons.
  • Order pharmaceuticals (other than controlled substances) and label trays as required. Checks stock to ensure that expiration dates of pharmaceuticals are not exceeded. Picks up as needed for emergencies. Works with the Pharmacy team when needed.
  • Cleans and stocks all areas in the workroom, equipment room, and hallway carts. Inventories same areas during the stocking procedure to ensure timely replenishment for various sites or storage areas relating to anesthesia, but not limited to ED, MRI, GI, CT, etc.
  • Performs daily tests of Cidex and glucose monitoring and records the results of the test. Cleans and processes the Scopes, SPO2, records temperature, range, and timing of the test.
  • Maintains detailed records of equipment leaving the department. Records include equipment leaving on a routine basis (signed out). Equipment accompanying patient to another area (must sign out).
  • Handle all equipment carefully and correctly. Provides a safe environment for employees and equipment by utilizing proper methods of general handling and transportation.
  • Based on the daily schedules, anticipates the needs of the Anesthesiologist for various equipment needs and supplies. Prepares the anticipated materials within departmental guidelines and completes records, daily reports and supplies at the end of each shift.
  • Inspect and fill vaporizers with appropriate agency daily including FDA calibrations and jet vents.
  • Prepares heavy equipment for transport. Assists in the transport of heavy equipment and ensures that it is in proper working order when arriving at its destination. Works with Bio Medical team regarding incoming inspection of new and old equipment.
  • Disassembles and disposes of all soiled blood warmer tubing after each case. Clean all Alaris Pumps and circuits as needed. Always utilize Universal Precautions when disposing of soiled supplies and during the cleaning procedures for each case to follow or for the next day.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree required, degree must be in a health-related field.
  • Completion of the ASATT course (certification) within 5 years of employment
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a related Clinical or Medical field associating with airways, respiratory, or perioperative experience.
  • Knowledge & skill to calibrate and run quality controls on anesthesia machines & respiratory gas monitors, Glucose and PICIS, and Epic
  • Training to perform daily pics tests of Cidex and record the results of the
  • Knowledge of methodology for inspection & filling of vaporizers with appropriate agents.
