Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Laboratory Administrative Director, the Laboratory Information System (LIS) Coordinator is the primary applications analyst responsible for providing on-going support of the Laboratory Information System, Pathology Information System and related modules, including system maintenance, functionality, test dictionaries, and interfaces. Acts as liaison between the Laboratory, Information Technology (IT) and all other departments for LIS-related activities. Maintains ongoing communication with lab staff, lab management, and Medical Director.

 

Serves as the primary consultant and resource for laboratory managers and staff for all issues relating to the Meditech laboratory modules and the Pathology Information System. Works closely with laboratory supervisors, who serve as technical resources for operations within each lab section.

Determines and accommodates the impact of various system changes on laboratory operations with other interfaced systems either automated or manual. Troubleshoots various problems and responds to various user needs.

Investigates and responds to end-user questions, and assists with the resolution of issues arising from the laboratory modules on a daily basis.

Maintains an in-depth knowledge of functions, features, database structures and data entry requirements for the laboratory modules. Actively coordinates and participates in training sessions for end users related to these modules.

Represents the laboratory regarding information systems matters with other departments and interfaces (eg. Reference laboratories and physician clients) to include:

  • Meditech Systems upgrades
  • Interface projects with other departments
  • Billing upgrades and test code assignment
  • Reference Laboratory interface testing and building
  • Reference Laboratory interface errors and test code upgrades
  • NPR report writing as needed to enhance the Laboratory modules.

Works with hospital IT, as needed, to oversee and troubleshoot issues with laboratory reporting through the network and Forward Advantage system.

Responsible for development of laboratory-specific downtime procedures in the event of planned and unplanned downtime of the hospital information system, network and/or laboratory information systems. Procedures must be specific to lab area and job function. Works with the laboratory management team to train staff on downtime procedures.

Works closely with other hospital IT personnel to determine when system changes by other departments will affect the LIS modules.

Will provide support in the development of LIS functionality and third party vendor systems as required.

Assists in the development and review of laboratory policies and procedures related to administration and operation of the laboratory modules.

Organizes and conducts interdepartmental meetings among departments directly impacted by the laboratory modules, as needed. Provides a forum for presenting new issues and resolving old issues related to laboratory information systems.

Assists in the testing, implementation and maintenance of all software updates, instrumentation interface upgrades and replacements; new release for the laboratory information systems software and instrumentation related upgrades. Provides guidance and coordination in the planning and scheduling of assigned systems projects with appropriate sections of IT department.

Works with Meditech Information Systems personnel to resolve laboratory interface and testing ordering issues.

Evaluates requests for system enhancements and provides timetable for completion.  Monitors all assigned projects in development and provides periodic status reports.

Oversees quality assurance activities as they relate to the LIS functions and other module functions as they affect laboratory outcomes.

Works with laboratory managers to ensure all laboratory staff are oriented and trained on the Meditech LIS, including all laboratory modules, and the CoPath pathology system. Ensures competency documentation is in place as needed, to document orientation and training in LIS activities.

 

 

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or IT related field is required.
  • Prior LIS and/or Pathology Information System experience preferred.
  • Minimum five years related experience including at least two years Laboratory Information Systems experience is required.
  • Previous experience with the Meditech laboratory applications and instrument interface knowledge is required.
  • Generalist technical knowledge is strongly preferred.
  • The specific combination of related education and experience will be considered.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, physicians, and other staff both verbally and in writing is required.
